There’s nothing quite like a New England summer; I love everything from the abundance of delicious fresh seafood specialties, to the many amazing beaches, vineyards, and other local spots that can only be visited from May until September. Having grown up in Connecticut, I am definitely a bit biased, but it is only something I can admit proudly after having spent summers in other places where it is just not the same.
When it comes to my personal style, I’ve never fully identified with just one aesthetic or trend. New Englanders are undoubtedly preppy with brands like Vineyard Vines, a favorite for beachy and everyday attire alike that continues to build a loyal following. For me it’s always been about finding the perfect balance. Ralph Lauren is, and has always been one of my favorite designers, read: at ten years old I begged for a coral poplin dress with straps that crossed in the back from Ralph Lauren, which, I have to admit, is an adorable dress that I still have to this day. With that said, I love selecting individual items and finding ways in which I can mix and match them with other styles and trends.
For this look, I decided to pair one of my ultimate summer staples, an old J.Crew button-up that I’ve had for years, with a thrifted pair of Levi shorts, the Nine West espadrille flats I can’t get enough of, and of course, a straw fedora. It’s such a simple but classic look that will never go out of style no matter how many summers have gone by, which is why I keep coming back to it, year after year.
Below I’ve selected and compiled a handful of my favorite New England summer staples, including several pieces that I’ve been wearing on repeat as of late. Whether you shy away from “preppy” attire, embrace it with open arms, or are simply looking for classic summer pieces, there is hopefully something for everyone in this selection, and it’s the perfect time to shop the end of summer sales, and invest in pieces that can be re-styled and worn over the years.
